Children's Arthritis Network

In 1996, the Children’s Arthritis Network (CAN) was established to focus on the specific problems related to arthritis in children. This collaborative effort was formed to serve children with arthritis and rheumatic diseases, their parents and health professionals who are entrusted with their care. The Children’s Arthritis Network was established through the generosity of the Heinz Family Foundation and continues to exist because of funding and coordination now being provided by the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. It is the only statewide comprehensive network of care for children with rheumatic diseases in America. Its members are parents, family members, doctors, nurses, occupational and physical therapists, social workers, young adults and anyone with an interest in arthritis in young people.

Pediatric Rheumatologists from tertiary care centers operate five CAN outreach clinics to serve children in the cities of Bethlehem, State College, Wilkes-Barre, Lancaster and York, PA. These clinics provide care to families who would otherwise have to travel 2 to 4 hours to see a Pediatric Rheumatologist. With the development of the outreach clinics, children receive care closer to home, and care closer to home means that therapy and special school services are coordinated and provided in their communities.

The Children’s Arthritis Network also encompasses education programs for families including Camp JRA (Juveniles Reaching Achievement), Family Days, Teen Service Projects, Pen Pal Programs, a Holiday Party, Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Week, and Reunion Programs. Additionally, the Children’s Arthritis Network serves as a clearinghouse of information for the public on topics from medications and educational rights, to social services and legislative issues. Materials include an annual newsletter, newly diagnosed family packets, free brochures, self-help manuals and educational materials for families, teachers and school nurses.
